Alembic

Mix Fire, Water, Earth and Air in a candlelit 3D alchemist's atelier to discover 200+ original elements, follow quests and chase a fresh daily target.

Alembic is a cozy element-merging discovery game set in an alchemist's atelier at night. A copper cauldron bubbles on a worn oak workbench between candles, an open grimoire and shelves of glowing jars, with moonlight falling through the window. You begin with Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Drag two elements into the cauldron, drop one onto another on the bench, or simply tap two in turn, and see what they make. A new discovery flares up out of the brew, rises and turns in the candlelight, then gets a name card with a line of flavor text. A mix that doesn't work just fizzles, with a gentle remark and nothing lost. There are 207 elements to find across ten categories, from weather, materials and living things to people, tools, myths, the night sky and the kitchen. Every one can be brewed from the four basics, most in more than one way, and 11 of them are secrets. The Grimoire keeps every element and recipe you have found by category, with silhouettes for the ones still missing. Thirteen quests run from Brew Life to Forge a Sword, Summon a Dragon and The Great Work. An ink-blot hint helps when you are stuck. Each day brings a new daily target: reach today's element from the four basics in as few brews as you can, and match par for Gold.

How to play

Drag into the cauldron / tap two elements / type to search

You start with Fire, Water, Earth and Air in your drawer. Drag an element into the cauldron, where it waits, then drag a second one in to brew the two together. You can also drop an element straight onto another one resting on the bench.

Rather not drag? Tap one element, then another, and they mix in the cauldron. Tap the same element twice to mix it with itself. Your drawer never runs out, and a mix that fizzles costs nothing.

Each new discovery rises from the cauldron with a name card and joins your Grimoire. Tap the open book on the bench to see every element and recipe you have found by category, with silhouettes for the ones still missing.

Keyboard: start typing or press / to search. Enter picks the first match and clears the field, so typing the next name and pressing Enter brews the pair. Arrow keys move between elements, Enter or Space selects, Esc steps back and ? opens help. Drag the empty bench to look around, and pinch or scroll to zoom.

Tips

Stuck? The ink-blot Hint names one ingredient of something you can brew right now. Press it again after the ink dries (40 seconds) to see the other one. When the answer is an element mixed with itself, it shows both at once.

Most elements can be brewed more than one way. If a combination fails, try a close relative of one ingredient, such as rain instead of water or wind instead of air. Select an element and the drawer marks every element it has already fizzled with as tried.

The daily target starts you with only the four basics, and every brew counts, fizzles and hints included. Plan your route before you mix: reaching the target at par earns Gold and a score of 1000.

Quests point toward deeper parts of the recipe book, and a handful of secret elements stay out of the Grimoire's counts until you find them.

Can I play this element merging game online without a download?

Yes. Alembic is an original single-player browser game that runs inside the page with WebGL enabled. It is free and needs no account or app.

How does the daily target work?

Each day has one target element and a par, the fewest brews it can take from Fire, Water, Earth and Air. You start with only those four. Every brew counts, including fizzles, and each hint adds one. Matching par scores 1000 and earns Gold (three stars), finishing within three brews of par earns Silver and anything more earns Bronze. You can replay the day's target for practice, and your best score is kept.

How many elements are there?

207 original elements in ten categories, 11 of them secret. Every element can be brewed starting from the four basics, and most have more than one recipe.

Does Alembic save my progress?

Yes, on Goblin Arcade. Your discoveries, recipes, quests, daily results and settings save automatically, and the bench starts clear each visit. Played outside the arcade, progress lasts until the page closes.

Can I play if I am colorblind?

Yes. Colors are only decoration. Every category carries an emblem, and its name is shown in the drawer, the Grimoire, the name card and the tag over any element you hold, target, select or point at. Selected elements get an outline and a check badge, and results are told apart by text, motion and sound.
