Plopjar

Drop goofy critters into a pickle jar. Two of a kind hug into the next, weirder one, up an 11-critter ladder to the rare Moon Hog. Don't let the jar overflow.

Plopjar is a drop-and-merge physics puzzle set in a big glass pickle jar. Slide to aim the critter waiting at the rim, let go, and it plops into the jar. When two of the same critter touch, they hug and become the next, bigger, weirder one, and the hug scores points: Pebblebug, Snailtoast, Mossmouse, Teacup Toad, Tentacactus, Puddingbat, Topiaroar, Wobbletrunk, Tubalrus, Couchosaurus and finally Moon Hog, a cratered moon with a pig snout at the very top of the ladder that very few runs ever build. In the rare run that builds two, they float off to the moon for a 500-point bonus and free up the jar. You only ever drop the five smallest critters, so everything bigger has to be built by hugging, and quick hugs in a row build a chain bonus. The next critter shows in a bubble so you can plan ahead, and once per run a Jar Shake wobbles the whole jar to unstick a jam. A critter that stays above the dashed line for two seconds ends the run: faces panic and the line glows pink when the jar gets close, and a countdown ring appears on any critter over it. About one hug in 40 makes a Shiny critter with a sparkly outline, and your Jardex records every critter and every Shiny you have found. The Daily Jar gives everyone the same drop order for the day, so a same-day score challenge is fair, with unlimited retries and your best score kept for each date. Endless uses a fresh random drop order every run. On Goblin Arcade your Jardex, best scores and sound setting save automatically.

How to play

Slide and let go to drop (touch) · move and click (mouse) / ← → or A D aim, Space or ↓ drop, S Jar Shake, P pause

Put a finger anywhere on the jar and slide sideways: the critter at the rim follows your finger and stays above it (unless you touch the very top edge of the play area), with a dotted line showing where it will land. Let go to drop it. With a mouse, move to aim and click to drop; on a keyboard, aim with ← → or A D and drop with Space or ↓.

When two of the same critter touch, they hug and become the next critter up the ladder, and you score points. Bigger hugs score more, and hugs that follow each other within a moment add a chain bonus.

The Next bubble shows the critter after the one you are holding. You can drop again about half a second after each drop.

Keep the jar below the dashed line. A critter that stays above it for two seconds ends the run. Press the Shake button (or S) once per run to wobble the jar loose.

Tips

Keep big critters together low in the jar and small ones on top, so matching pairs can actually reach each other.

Hug scores grow fast up the ladder: two Pebblebugs score 2, two Tubalruses score 90 and two Couchosauruses score 110.

Save the Jar Shake for a real jam near the line. It only works once per run.

Watch the Next bubble: if the next critter matches something on top of the pile, drop the current one somewhere else.

Everyone who plays the same day's Daily Jar gets the same drop order, so a same-day score challenge is a fair fight.

Can I play this drop-and-merge puzzle online for free?

Yes. Plopjar is an original single-player browser game. It runs in the page with no download, account or app.

Can I play Plopjar on a phone?

Yes. It is built for touch: slide anywhere on the jar to aim and let go to drop, and the critter rides above your finger so your thumb does not hide it (unless you touch the very top edge of the play area). Every button is at least 44 pixels, and it works in portrait and landscape.

What is the Daily Jar?

Every day (by UTC date) the Daily Jar gives every player the same order of critters to drop, so scores on the same day are a fair comparison. You can retry as often as you like, and your best score for each date is kept. Endless mode uses a random order every run.

What is a Shiny critter?

About one hug in 40 makes a Shiny: the same critter with a sparkly outline and a twinkle sound. A hug that makes a Shiny scores 50% more, and the Jardex keeps a separate slot for each Shiny you find.

Does Plopjar save my progress?

Yes, on Goblin Arcade. Your Jardex, Shiny finds, best Daily Jar score for each recent date, Endless best and sound setting save automatically. A run in progress starts over if you reload. Played outside the arcade, progress lasts only until the page closes.

Can I play if I am colorblind?

Yes. The 11 critters differ in size, outline shape and face, not only in color, and their colors also differ in lightness. The danger line is dashed and pulses, and a countdown ring with seconds appears on any critter above it.
