Jam Side Up

A toast flip game: fling a jammy slice from plate to plate, tap to flip it in the air and land it jam-side up through a new 30-plate house every day.

Jam Side Up is a toast flip game about the old saying that toast always lands buttered side down. It is midnight breakfast in a goblin house, and you set out to prove the saying wrong. Drag back anywhere and let go to fling the jammy slice off the breakfast table, then tap while it flies: every tap adds a half-flip, so an even number of taps lands it jam-side up and an odd number lands it jam-side down, as long as the last flip finishes before the slice touches down. A badge beside the slice shows JAM UP, JAM DOWN or WON'T FINISH before it touches down. Land it jam-up on the next plate and that plate becomes your next launch pad. Thirty plates climb from the Kitchen through four of six rooms (the Pantry, Staircase, Bathroom, Parlor, Hound Corner and Attic) to the Roof. The rooms have different ceiling heights, which cap how long you can fly and so how many flips fit. It also serves its own breakfast: toast, a fast-spinning slippery bagel, a grippy waffle or a floaty pancake. Plates change too: small saucers, slick butter trays, sticky syrup plates, rolling tea carts and bobbing trays. Scoring is plain addition. Each plate is worth 100, each full flip +100 and a bullseye landing +50, a slice saved on the rim is worth 50, and reaching the Roof pays 1,000 plus 250 for every slice left. You have three slices, and a slice that lands jam-down, on its crust or on the floor is a splat. The Daily house is the same for everyone on a given UTC date, with unlimited retries. Classic is one fixed house for a personal best. At the end the Breakfast Bill adds up your score line by line. Ten badges fill the Breakfast Book, and four of them unlock cosmetic jam flavours. On Goblin Arcade your bests, badges and settings save automatically.

How to play

Drag back and release to toss, tap to flip / ←→ angle, ↑↓ power, Space toss and flip

Press anywhere on the screen, drag back away from the next plate, and let go. The pull sets the angle and the power, and the dotted line shows the start of the arc. Let go close to where you pressed to cancel.

While the slice flies, tap anywhere (or press Space, F or J). Each tap adds a half-flip. Two taps make one full flip and land it jam-side up again, and one tap lands it jam-side down, as long as the flip finishes before the slice lands.

Watch the badge beside the slice. JAM UP ✓ means it will land jam-up. JAM DOWN ✗ means it will splat. WON'T FINISH means the flip can't complete before it lands, so it will come down rough or on the crust.

Land jam-up on the plate to move on. A slice that lands jam-down, on its crust, off the plate or on the floor is a splat, and you have three slices. Clear plate 30 on the Roof to finish the house.

Tips

Scoring adds up in the open: plate 100, each full flip +100, bullseye +50 and teeter 50. A rough landing (tilted but jam-up) is worth 100 with no bonuses. The Roof pays 1,000 plus 250 per slice left.

High lobs give more airtime for flips but are harder to aim. Low ceilings in the Attic and on the Staircase cap your airtime, so fewer flips fit there.

Every breakfast flies differently: bagels spin fast but slide far, waffles grip, and pancakes float. The room card tells you which one you are holding.

Butter trays are slippery, so throw softer or higher. Syrup plates stop a slice dead. On a rolling cart or bobbing tray, wait for the right moment.

After a clean landing with two or more flips, an instant replay plays it back at 0.4× speed. Tap to skip it.

Can I play this toast flip game online for free?

Yes. Jam Side Up is an original, free toast flip game that runs in the browser with no download, account or app. Fling the slice, tap to flip it and land it jam-side up.

Does toast really always land jam-side down?

That is the old saying about toast landing buttered side down, and this game plays with it. A slice that misses a plate always lands jam-down here, as a joke. A toss with an even number of taps that finishes turning before it touches down lands jam-up.

What changes in the Daily house?

Each UTC day builds a new 30-plate house from the date: the order of the four middle rooms, which breakfast each room serves, and the plates and their motion. Everyone gets the same house that day, retries are unlimited, and your best score for each date is saved. Classic is one fixed house that never changes.

Can I play Jam Side Up on a phone?

Yes. It is built for one thumb: drag back anywhere to toss, so your thumb never covers the slice, and tap anywhere to flip. Portrait and landscape both work, and the pause and sound buttons are at least 44 pixels.

Can I play if I am colorblind?

Yes. Colour is never the only signal. The badge beside the slice uses a different icon shape for each state (an up-arrow drop, a down-arrow drop and a striped hourglass), plus the words JAM UP, JAM DOWN and WON'T FINISH. The jam always has a wavy, dripping edge, so you can tell which side is up. Jam flavours only change colour, never the badge.
