Bonk the Moles

Bonk moles on a goblin's backyard lawn with a squeaky foam mallet. Clean combos play today's tune, the skunk costs you, and everyone gets the same lawn each day.

Bonk the Moles is a quick reflex arcade game on a goblin's backyard lawn at dusk. Moles pop out of the holes and you bonk them with a squeaky foam mallet before they duck back down. Each round lasts 25 seconds and has a target score: beat it and you pick a hammer charm, miss it and the moles win. Bonk without missing to build a combo, which raises your multiplier from x1.0 up to x4.0, and every clean bonk plays the next note of today's 16-note tune; finish all 16 in a row for a Full Tune bonus. The lawn grows from 9 holes to 12 in Round 5, and the moles get quicker. Helmet moles wear acorn caps and need two bonks, speedy moles wear goggles and duck fast, golden moles are worth 100, a leafy bush is a decoy, and bonking the skunk costs a quarter of your round score and leaves a stink cloud over two holes. In Rounds 4 and 8 the Mole King rises with a crown and cape across four holes; 12 bonks pop his crown for 500 bonus points. After each cleared round you pick one of three charms for your mallet, such as Chain Zap, Splash, Big Mallet, Carrot Bait, Grandpa Hammer or Encore, and hold up to five. Clear all 8 rounds for the Day shift bonus, then keep going in the endless Night Shift or clock out to bank your score. Today's Lawn is the same for every player on a UTC date, with three scored attempts per day and an unlimited Practice lawn. The end screen shows your score per round and exactly where your points came from. On Goblin Arcade your attempts, bests and settings save automatically.

How to play

Tap or click a hole / Q W E, A S D, Z X C keys (R F V or 1 2 3 on the 12-hole lawn), P or Esc to pause

Moles pop out of the holes on the lawn. Tap or click a mole to bonk it before it ducks back down. Keyboard players can use Q W E, A S D and Z X C, which follow the holes on screen; the 12-hole lawn adds R F V (or 1 2 3 when the lawn is tall).

Each round lasts 25 seconds and shows a target score. Beat the target to clear the round and pick one of three hammer charms. Miss it and the moles win, which ends the run.

Every bonk without a miss adds to your combo and multiplier, from x1.0 up to x4.0, and plays the next note of today's tune. Tapping an empty hole or the decoy bush is a miss and resets the combo. A mole that gets away never breaks your combo.

Never bonk the skunk: it costs a quarter of your round score, breaks your combo and covers two holes with a stink cloud for 2 seconds. Clear all 8 day rounds for a 1,000-point bonus, then play the endless Night Shift or clock out to bank your score.

Tips

Accuracy beats speed. One miss resets your multiplier, so a calm streak of clean bonks scores far more than frantic tapping.

Golden moles are worth 100 points before your multiplier. Helmet moles take two bonks; the first knocks the acorn cap off and still counts toward your combo.

In Rounds 4 and 8 the Mole King takes 12 bonks across his four holes and moves after every third. Popping his crown is worth 500 points, so stay on him.

Sixteen clean bonks in a row play today's whole tune for a Full Tune bonus. Everyone gets the same tune and the same lawn on a given day, so compare runs with friends.

Charms stack. When all five slots are full you can swap one out or pocket the new one for 200 points.

Can I play Bonk the Moles online for free?

Yes. Bonk the Moles is an original single-player browser game. It runs in the page with no download, account or app.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It is built for touch: the whole cell around each hole counts as the hole, so taps near a mole still land, and the game registers up to two fingers at once. It plays in portrait or landscape. Each hole's tap area is at least 80 pixels wide on small phone screens, and every button is at least 40 pixels.

What is Today's Lawn?

Every UTC day has its own lawn: the same mole schedule, the same charm deck each round (so the same picks see the same offers) and the same named tune for every player. You get three scored attempts per day and your best one counts. After that, the Practice lawn is unlimited and random.

How is the score worked out?

Each bonk scores the mole's points times your multiplier, and every bonk shows its maths, such as 10 x 2.3 = 23. Full Tunes, crowns, the Day shift bonus and some charms add more, and skunks take some away. The end screen lists every line, and the lines add up exactly to your score.

Can I play if I am colorblind?

Yes. Every mole type has its own shape or accessory: an acorn cap, goggles with speed streaks, a star badge with sparkle rays, a raised striped tail with stink lines, or a leafy bush with no face. Cleared rounds are marked with a check mark and failed ones are hatched with a cross.
