Hotaru Mart

Walk a country road in rural Japan at summer dusk to a tiny convenience store. Shop grandma's list on a yen budget, pay the clerk and fill your point card.

Hotaru Mart is a cozy first-person walk through rural Japan at dusk. Follow a narrow road between flooded rice paddies, past a glowing vending machine, a country bus stop and a little roadside shrine, while fireflies come out over the fields. At the end of the road sits Hotaru Mart, a small, warmly lit convenience store. Grandma's handwritten note lists what she needs and how much money she gave you. Pick items from the shelves, fridges and freezer, answer the clerk at the register (warm the bento? need a bag? point card?), count out your yen and take your receipt. Completing the note scores points for finishing, for the change you bring back, for speed and for following grandma's instructions. Afterwards keep wandering, take the next errand, or sit at the bus stop and watch night fall. Every name and product in the store is fictional.

How to play

WASD and mouse / joystick and drag / E or tap to interact

Read grandma's note when the errand starts. It lists what to buy, how much money she gave you and how she wants you to pay. Then walk down the road to Hotaru Mart; the doors slide open as you approach.

Look at an item and press E, click or tap the action button to put it in your basket. Take a basket by the door first if you need more than three things. Fried chicken and pork buns are ordered at the hot case beside the register.

At the register, answer the clerk the way the note asks: warm the bento or not, bag or no bag, point card. Put coins and notes on the tray and pay. Finishing the note completes the errand; then take the next errand or keep exploring.

Keyboard: WASD or arrows to walk, Shift to run, the mouse to look (click the scene to lock it, or drag), E to interact, N for the note, B for the basket and Esc to pause. Touch: the left stick walks, dragging on the right looks around and the round button interacts.

Tips

Extra items cost money. Every yen of change you bring back raises your score, so stick to the list.

Read the note's instructions before paying: warming the bento, declining or accepting a bag and showing your point card each earn a manners bonus.

Ten stamps fill the point card and earn a free soda ice pop. Sitting on the bus-stop bench makes the evening pass faster.

Can I play this konbini game online without a download?

Yes. Hotaru Mart is an original single-player browser game that runs inside the page with WebGL enabled. It is free and needs no account or app.

Do I need to read Japanese?

No. Signs and the clerk speak Japanese, but grandma's note, every prompt and every question at the register have English subtitles. You can turn the subtitles off in the pause menu.

Is there a time limit?

No. A faster errand earns a speed bonus, but nothing fails if you take your time, and free play has no timer.

Does Hotaru Mart save my progress?

Your wallet, point-card stamps, completed errands and best score are saved in this browser. An unfinished errand starts over after reloading, with grandma's money returned to your wallet.
